The holidays are upon us, and it’s prime time to send greeting cards. Photo greeting cards are very popular and a great way to send out the latest family photo. However, you can set up different elements and create a still life that would be perfect to send as a greeting card. It’s relatively simple to do and gives you an opportunity to stretch your creativity skills.
Start with an idea and then gather your items. It’s okay not to know in advance exactly what you want. For the card example with the candle, there were just a couple of things that were used: a candle flower wreath with the colors of fall, that was purchased for $10 and used as a centerpiece for a Thanksgiving dinner, a piece of fabric, and several sheets of tissue paper.
For the setup, a small table was placed by a window for lighting. You can even setup outside in an area where there is not direct sunlight, like on a patio. A piece of white foam board was stationed behind the candle wreath to provide support for the background.
Different materials were tried for the background, starting with draped fabric, however red, yellow, and green tissue were the final choice.
In photographing the image, try different camera angles; shoot both horizontal and vertical images, giving yourself several different options to choose from. Also, even though you do have the window light, try using flash as well, and see if you like the results you get from that
The final image choice was taken into photo editing software to add blur the background and a soft glow was added to the entire image. Wording was added to complete the greeting.
The finished image can now be used as is as a 6×4 card, or it can used in a layout provided by the photo printing company. You can get cards at relatively good prices at places like Costco, which has an offer for 50 6” x 7 ½” photo greeting cards with envelopes for just $14.99.
