The Let's ReFrame Beauty Project

Redefining Beauty While Contending with Unrealistic Beauty Standards

Psychologists and researchers have raised serious concerns about the negative impact of social media on children and adolescents, particularly in relation to unrealistic beauty standards.

It's estimated that around 40-50% of young people, especially girls, are significantly affected by these pressures. Exposure to edited and filtered images can lead to body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and an obsession with achieving unattainable beauty ideals.

These feelings can escalate into more serious mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, body dysphoria, and even eating disorders.

Young people are especially vulnerable as they navigate their self-identity during formative years

Addressing the Issues

To effectively address the issues, the focus of the project includes:

  • Encouraging a broader representation of beauty
  • Promoting body positivity
  • Encouraging greater self-value and self-awareness
  • Fostering media literacy
  • True Beauty Photo Session

Student Photo Collages and Testimonials

Honestly, when they first came into my class, I thought it was going to be another boring speech. However, it was interesting. They made it fun. I got involved because I thought it would be a cool experience. I always say, ’I only live one time, why waste my one life.’ I enjoyed doing this, it was fun. Also, everyone is very sweet and cares about my opinions and want to hear what I have to say.”~ Lilliana

One part of this program that really caught my attention was the meaning behind it. I also really liked and was interested in the modeling. It really wasn’t a priority until I saw how much the facilitators valued this program, then I took it more seriously. I am very nervous about putting myself out there, but I feel this project will help me break that fear. ~ Paul

At first, I was nervous to even agree to be a part of this program and do a photo shoot. I ended up agreeing and volunteered to do the photo shoot. I ended up having fun in the process. This was a learning experience, and it was nice knowing that my friends were doing this with me. The mentors are awesome. They showed up time and time again, being very respectful, and sticking true to their words. This was a very enjoyable experience. ~ Iris

At first, I was a little skeptical and nervous to speak up and participate, but this program was a great learning experience and the ladies were super nice and helpful, which made me want to do it. The program gave me confidence and helped me gain self-love during this photo shoot. It was a very cool experience and I am happy I did it. Before I joined the program, I felt OK. I never really put thought into these kind of topics. Now that I’ve joined, I’ve learned way more and started to feel a little better about myself.~ Valerie

I am proud to be working with Partners Against Violence because their words follow their actions. Many organizations come to the school and make promises, but there is no follow-through. I was pleasantly surprised that PAV followed through on their promises. Thank you for this program; it made me realize that Barstow could be better, seeing our city in a different light.~ Israel

I wanted to do this for the community and to put positivity out there. This is a really great program because I truly believe it brings a good & positive impact to the community. I feel like joining this program made me more aware of things. ~ Charisma

At the very beginning of the program’s introduction I was not interested. As it continued, I realized the significance and how deep the meaning behind it was. I enjoyed working with all the wonderful ladies who worked the program. This program is such a good message not only for teens but for younger children as well.~ Tatiana

Doors of opportunity are open to me! That’s what this photo represents. Though in my life growing up in foster care, I may have felt the walls were closed in on me and I couldn’t get out, but, I now know that good things are ahead, as wonderful doors have opened for me. This workshop has helped me to see that!

One thing I've learned through the workshops is It’s okay to be myself. I am lovable the way I am. I won’t let others get me down. I will make changes that I can make. I will talk more positively about myself, because I am a valuable young woman.

Working with Joan and all of her amazing lifestyle development programs has been life-changing. As a young adult taking her classes, I learned how to apply grace and kindness towards myself and others. Joan planted the seeds of love in my heart and gave me the tools to help them grow. Now I am a life coach and entrepreneur in the health and wellness spectrum.  Thank you, Joan and thank you, Lord for putting her in my path.
